Panthers on the Run 5K

Picture
Saturday, December 1st, WES had their first Panthers on the Run 5K.  Several WES families, students, staff, and friends came out and enjoyed the event.  Coach Moseley and her team of helpers did an amazing job planning and carrying out the event.  The students and their running partners did a wonderful job persevering through the 5K and crossing the finish line.  The event was life-changing and very moving to watch as many lives were changed by this powerful event.  Thanks Coach Moseley to your desire to make a difference in the lives of our students and families.

Dr. Suess Literacy Night!

On March 5th, WES went out into our community and held a Dr. Suess themed Literacy Night. Families were greeted by various Dr. Suess decorations and energetic staff members as they entered the Greenbrier Event Center.  Upon their arrival to the event center students received a “passport” that was completed by rotating to the various interactive, educational stations that were strategically set up around the event center.  The stations included a library card station, a reading station, a bookmark making station, a book exchange station, a Suess character picture station, a run to read station, and a snack station.  Technology, fun, food, kinesthetic activity, family/community involvement, and literacy were all integrated into a fun-filled night.  We are very appreciative of all those who organized the event, donated items, volunteered their time, and participated in the event.  This is just another reason why WESTSIDE is the BEST SIDE!

Spirit Day and
Test Pep Rally

On March 23, WES students and staff attended the March Spirit Day and the 2013 Test Pep Rally at the Greenbrier Performing Arts Building.  Students, staff, and families were greeted by the Greenbrier Jr High Band as they played various tunes.  This was a great day to celebrate student achievement and to encourage students to do their best over the next couple of weeks on the state testing.  Students, staff, and families were entertained with the Ms. WES Perfect Test-Taker Pageant.  Participants were some of WES finest - Ms. Overslept (Mrs. Redden), Ms. Unhealthy Breakfast (Mrs. Grider), Ms. Stayed Up Too Late (Mrs. Welter), Ms. Nervous (Mrs. Lewter), Ms. Know It All (Mrs. Sibert), Ms. Distractor (Mrs. Moseley), Mrs. Rushed (Mrs. Duncan), Ms. Daydreamer (Mrs. Chandler), Ms. I Don't Want to Do It (Mrs. Henthorne), Ms. Tardy (Mrs. Massery), Ms. I Need the Nurse (Ms. Taylor), and Ms. Prepared (Mrs. Golden).  Students then nominated Ms. Prepared as the winner with all of their cheers!  Of course it wouldn't have been complete without the Harlem Shake - WES staff always go above and beyond for their students.

Welcome to Westside!

Super Hero School
 Board Visit

On Tuesday, February 5th, members of the Greenbrier School Board (George Roberts aka Professor Element-O, Greg Oaks aka Mighty Oak, Randy Goodnight aka the Good Knight, Carla Fix aka Quick Fix, and Jennifer Hill aka Phoenix Fraction) along with District Administrators (Scott Spainhour aka Batman, Lisa Todd aka Robin, and Peggy O’Reilly aka Batwoman) visited several of the campuses including Westside Elementary.  The theme of the event was Super Hero School Board. Our “Super Heroes” were greeted at the front doors by our building administrators, counselor, and our wonderful school ambassadors.  Each board member and district level administrator was then given a bucket filled with goodies (prepared by PTO). The buckets were a representation of our school theme of being “bucket-fillers”. Super Heroes were then escorted to the cafeteria to preview an excerpt from the play “Annie” in which our fourth grade choir will be performing on February 28th.  Super Heroes enjoyed traveling through the halls at Westside as they were able to view wonderful works of art, writing, research projects, and various other pieces of student work all centered around our super hero theme.  Westside Administrators gave the Super Heroes an update on school progress as they enjoyed a “super hero smoothie” before touring the classrooms. The Super Heroes’ buckets continued to be filled as they visited our K-5th grade classrooms where “drops” that contained hand-written messages of encouraging words of appreciation were given to them along with various other “goodies” of appreciation. The students and staff enjoyed filling the buckets of our Super Hero School Board and District Administrators and hope that they enjoy the timeless words and gifts of appreciation that were given throughout their visit.

Notes from Mrs. Newland:

Picture
In effort to increase students exposure to various types of literature, Westside Elementary is adjusting  it’s morning routine to allow students the opportunity to engage in reading.  The atmosphere will be encouraging as we strive to provide a warm, welcoming environment for our students to enjoy reading self-selected, outstanding works of literature. PROWL Time will occur Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 7:55am - 8:20am in the PE building and in the cafeteria.  Students will be allowed to AR test once they have finished their book.  Students will also have access to the library during this time.   Teachers will be available to assist students with reading strategies as needed during PROWL Time.  This is a great opportunity for your child to have a designated time focused solely on reading literature that interests them. Teachers will be reminding students to put their books in their backpacks at the end of each day.
Please assist us in making sure your child has their book with them each morning!

Wellness Night -

Wellness night was on February 19th.  Students, staff and family members enjoyed roatating between various dance stations where we learned how to Salsa, do a variety of line dances, and hip hop moves.  Whether you had moves or not before you came - you definitely left with some!  Thanks to all who came out and enjoyed this great family night of dancing.  We also want to thank the dance instructors that volunteered their time to teach us our "new moves".

ITBS and Benchmark Rewards!

WES students are entered into daily drawings for rewards during ITBS and Benchmark testing days.  Students who come to school on time, put forth their best effort, and persevere on the test not only get their name in the daily drawing but also get their name in the drawing for a new bike or a wave-striker!  Our first prize winner for 1st and 2nd grade was Joshua Ballew from Mrs. Ferebee's class and our second prize winner was Ryan Hansen from Mrs. Jackson's class.  Our first place winner for 3rd - 5th grade was Charlie Lutz from third grade and Raeann Hefter from fourth grade.  We are very proud of all our students and staff for the hard work they have put forth all year in order to prepare for these tests and their future!  WES students and staff ROCK!
