Students Learn High Frequency Words
1st graders are learning how to spell “here” and “where” this week. These are high frequency words with unexpected spellings. Sometimes we call these red words! The spelling is unexpected because it does not follow one or more of the spelling patterns students have learned thus far. “Where”, for example, has an e on the end, but the middle e does not make the long e sound. However, students will see and write this word frequently! We use a multi-sensory, evidence-based approach to teach these words using the sounds that students can accurately map to letters and filling in unexpected letters as they arise. Students practice spelling these words with their voices, bodies, and in their writing. #SESstandOUT #GreenbrierProud #RISEarkansas
