Take Your Legislator to School Month
Each fall, as Arkansas students return to the classroom, members of the General Assembly reach out to their local school districts in an effort to build better communication between educators and legislators.
Representative Stephen Meeks visited Greenbrier Middle School, Greenbrier Westside Elementary, and Greenbrier High School on Tuesday, September 19th. Rep. Meeks toured the campuses and visited with many different students, teachers, and staff members. The Westside Elementary Student Voice Leadership Team was able to speak with Rep. Meeks and ask questions about government. The Student Voice Leadership team gave suggestions on different ways they felt like he could support the school.
Rep. Meeks was able to take a first-hand look at the Weapons Detection Systems that are located at all of the secondary schools. He visited with teachers, administrators, and Greenbrier's mental health and behavioral services team to discuss continued concerns and needs to support students' mental health interventions. He also visited classrooms to see learning in action based on essential standards and the instructional strategies that are evidence-based and have allowed Greenbrier students to be successful. Included in this were visits with pre-engineering students, the elementary literacy block, which included small group reading, and Panther Plus, an intervention and extension period for the high school.
Rep. Meeks is serving his seventh term in the Arkansas House of Representatives. He represents District 42, which includes a portion of Van Buren, Faulkner, and Cleburne Counties.
