      Frequently Asked Questions

These FAQs aim to address common concerns and provide clarity on the purpose and procedures of the cell phone pouch policy, ensuring that parents are well-informed and supportive of the initiative.

What is a cell phone pouch?

A cell phone pouch is a secure, lockable bag that students use to store their cell phones during school hours. It ensures that phones are not accessible during times students are learning academic, social, or behavioral skills, minimizing distractions and promoting a focused learning environment.

Why is the school implementing the use of cell phone pouches?

The school is implementing cell phone pouches to reduce distractions, improve academic performance, and promote student engagement in the classroom. Research has shown that limiting phone access can enhance concentration and overall school performance.

How does the cell phone pouch system work?

Upon arrival at school, students place their cell phones in the pouch, which is then locked. The pouches remain locked throughout the school day. At the end of the day, students unlock the pouches to retrieve their phones. The system ensures that phones are secure and inaccessible during school hours.

What if I want to reach my child during the school day?

In case of an emergency, parents can contact the school office, and staff will relay the message to the student immediately. The school has established protocols to ensure that urgent communications are handled promptly and efficiently. For general messages, parents can also contact the school office for information to be sent to students.

What if there is a school emergency?

The priority is always to follow school safety protocol. Students should not be on their phones, but rather following school staff instructions during an emergency. School staff have access to emergency tools to assist in such potential situations and give students access at the appropriate and safe time. Schools will follow communication protocols to notify parents of emergency events and the next steps.

Will my student’s phone be safe?

Students have their phones in their Yondr pouch for the entire school day. Students have the option to keep their phone in the pouch with them throughout the day or to store their phone in the pouch in their lockers.

What if the Yondr pouch gets damaged?

The Yondr pouch is the property of Greenbrier Schools. If a student damages their pouch, they will be responsible for the replacement fee similar to if they were to damage other pieces of school property. Damage consists of any signs that the physical integrity of the pouch has been compromised, whether intentional or unintentional, as determined by the school or Yondr staff.

What if a student forgets their pouch?

Students without a pouch will leave their phones labeled and secured in the front office. If a student repeatedly forgets their pouch, additional consequences will be implemented.

What if a student is caught on their phone?

Consequences vary according to the cell phone policy and student handbook, including the phone being confiscated until the end of the day, to a parent having to come pick up the phone, and the student serving a detention or in-school suspension.

What if my student does not bring a phone to school?

If a student has no phone, they may sign in on the No Phone Register.

Can my child use their phone during breaks or lunch?

The pouches remain locked throughout the entire school day, including breaks and lunch. This policy is designed to maintain a consistent environment free from digital distractions. It will also allow for students to develop soft skills, including communication skills, with their peers during these times.

What if a student refuses to use the pouch?

The school has a policy in place for handling non-compliance. Initially, the student will be reminded of the policy, its importance, and the expectation. Continued refusal may result in consequences as outlined in the school's code of conduct, which may include parent meetings and further disciplinary actions.

What are the benefits of a cell phone-free school?

Schools that have implemented phone-free environments report several benefits. These include improved student focus, better academic performance, reduced cyberbullying, and enhanced social interaction among students. In addition, it can positively impact school culture and reduce disciplinary issues. A study highlighted by the National Education Association (NEA) found that schools with strict cell phone policies saw fewer classroom disruptions and more engaged learning environments (National Education Association | NEA).

What funds are being used to purchase the Yondr pouches?

The Greenbrier School District received grant funding to purchase the Yondr pouches.
